Finally her song ended. Leeli came to herself and focused on the shimmering beasts below her, silent and watching. For a moment the only sound was the wind and the sea and the distant waterfall. Then the dragons arched their great necks, spread wide their fins, and bellowed an answer that rattled Janner’s teeth. It echoed Leeli’s tune in a sad, hopeful reprise. Then it stopped.

On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkess

That cover art is really amazing. I have the first two books, and both of them are even better in person. Anyways, On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, along with being perhaps the longest book title I have ever heard, kicks off The Wingfeather Saga with a good dose of mystery, adventure, and humor.

Plot

Janner Igiby and his family – Tink, his brother, Leeli, his sister, Nia, his mother, and Podo Helmer, his grandfather – live in the small town of Glipwood near the cliffs overlooking the Dark Sea of Darkness. After the Great War, the lizard-like Fangs of Dang have invaded the land of Skree (and everywhere else).

Peculiar things begin to find Janner: a mysterious map surfaces, odd journals are seen, and the mythical Shining Isle of Anniera seems to be more real than is thought. What are the Jewels of Anniera? What do all these odd happenings mean?

Characters

Janner is struggling with responsibility. He wants to be able to do things on his own, but as the oldest sibling he is forced to take care of Tink and Leeli. This book mainly focuses on Janner’s development; other characters are the object of later books.

Character and Spiritual Application

There are a number of references to The Maker, such as when they pray before eating, but there is no real strong spiritual theme.

Overall Thoughts

A very intriguing and mysterious opening to the series. The world development is amazing, and you will be immersed in the expansive lore and exotic creatures.
